Frequently Asked Questions
About In-Home Pet Euthanasia
As pet owners, we carry the responsibility of making decisions for our pets’ well-being. Euthanasia may become a compassionate option when a pet is experiencing severe or unmanageable pain, difficulty with basic functions, loss of interest in once-loved activities, or withdrawal from interaction with their beloved family. Changes such as these can signal a decline in quality of life.

It’s common for pets to experience a mix of better days and more challenging ones, which can make these decisions feel unclear. Keeping a simple record can offer helpful perspective. Some families find it meaningful to mark good days and difficult days on a calendar. When the harder days begin to outnumber the good, it may help guide your next steps.

If you need additional support or reassurance during this time, we encourage you to explore our on Grief Resources page, where you’ll find tools and support designed for families navigating pet loss.

Forever Loved Veterinary Services is a solo, veterinarian-led practice, and Dr. Christina Barber personally responds to all calls and messages.
Phone/Text/Email availability is Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–7:00 PM.
During availability hours, Dr. Barber works diligently to respond as promptly as possible. At times, responses may be delayed while she is providing focused, compassionate care to another family.
Messages received outside of posted availability will be returned on the next business day. If a pet’s condition changes urgently, families are encouraged to seek immediate care with an emergency provider if needed.
Appointments may be requested online, by phone, or by text (text preferred).
A completed patient form is required so we can learn more about your pet, their medical history, mobility, and specific needs. This information allows us to thoughtfully plan the most peaceful experience and ensure the appropriate medications and support are prepared in advance.
Once your appointment is scheduled, you will receive a follow-up email with additional details on how to prepare for the visit, what to expect at the time of the appointment, and information regarding aftercare arrangements. This guidance is meant to help the day feel as calm, clear, and supported as possible.
Dr. Barber will arrive at your home and perform a gentle assessment of your pet. After this, in the rare situation where payment and a signature has not already been obtained, it will be collected. Payment is collected before the procedure in order to allow you to focus on your pet without any other concerns or distractions.
The procedure itself can take place nearly wherever you and your pet are comfortable. Please note that with Arizona's extreme heat, an outdoor appointment may not be safe to schedule. Additionally, to ensure safety and dignity for all involved, we kindly ask that the space is accessible without the need to go up or down stairs, unless absolutely necessary (such as for entry access). We carry medical equipment and aftercare supplies, and navigating stairs while honoring your pet after passing can be both unsafe and difficult.
After confirming your wishes and comfortable proceeding, your pet will receive gentle sedative injections to help them relax and drift peacefully into a deep sleep. These medications usually take about 5 - 15 minutes to take effect. Rarely, additional medications may be necessary to administer. Once your pet is resting peacefully, a final medication will be given to gently and peacefully stop their heart and breathing. The length of time this process may take can vary depending on the method used. While we strive to make the experience as smooth as possible, adjustments or additional medication may occasionally be needed.

After the procedure, you are welcome to take as much time as you need for final goodbyes. When you feel ready, we will gently prepare your pet for transport to the cremation care center, if you have chosen aftercare services through our trusted partner facility.

If your pet is larger than 35 lbs, you will need to ensure there are enough loved ones present at time of appointment able to move your pet into veterinarian's vehicle to transport as due to safety our doctor is unable to do so.
If you are unable to move pet into veterinarian's vehicle for transportation we can coordinate with crematorium is needed to aide with moving/transportation.
**There is an additional fee charged by the aftercare center for this service.
We accept electronic payment (Zelle transfer or all major credit cards via Square processing) or cash. We are unable to provide change if payment is made via cash.
Forever Loved Veterinary Services is an appointment-based, in-home euthanasia practice and does not provide emergency, diagnostic, or life-saving medical care.
If your pet is experiencing a sudden medical crisis—such as difficulty breathing, uncontrolled pain, active seizures, severe trauma, or rapid deterioration—they may need immediate evaluation and stabilization at a veterinary emergency hospital.
In urgent situations, families are encouraged to contact the nearest emergency veterinary facility right away to ensure their pet receives timely care. Once your pet is stable, or if end-of-life care becomes the most appropriate next step, we are honored to help guide you through a peaceful and compassionate in-home goodbye when possible.
